It is a beautiful fall Saturday in Louisiana and it is election day. For a state where politics used to be our favorite sport; and a contact sport at that, there is only tepid enthusiasm for this election cycle. At the top of the ticket is the race for Governor and the incumbent, Bobby Jindal, drew only very weak minor opposition. The other major statewide races are pitting only candidates from the same party against one another. And almost 50% of all state representatives and senators found themselves unopposed.
Believe me, there is far more interest today in the LSU v Auburn game, tomorrow night's Saint game and the many fall fair and festivals are garnering more interest than this election.
All that aside, what should a faithful Catholic do, here today in Lousiana, or in the upcoming elections for our national leadership. For one thing, we should all be informed voters. For another thing, and more important, we should carefully examine candidates words and actions to gauge how far from Catholic teaching and God's moral natural law they stray.
