As has become an annual tradition for Catholics in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, this year Wednesday, September 9 has been designated an evening where all Catholic Churches in the Archdiocese of New Orleans will be open for the Sacrament of Reconciliation beginning from 7 pm to 9 pm or until the last confession is heard.  The evening confession times are meant to encourage Catholics to make time for the Sacrament, and Archbishop Gregory Aymond is encouraging families to go together to receive God’s love, forgiveness and grace.
“Pope Francis has reminded us that God never tires of forgiving us, but perhaps we grow tired of asking for forgiveness,” wrote Archbishop Aymond in a letter to local clergy, religious and laity in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. “Our Holy Father reminds us instead that we must humbly ask for God’s mercy knowing that he gives it in abundance.  Please consider having your family come to church together for Confession on Wednesday, September 9.”
This marks the third year the archdiocese has made this open invitation to all Catholics to come together and to make the Sacrament of Reconciliation available on a weekday evening, and each year, parishes have reported increased participation.  This year, the date aligns well in anticipation of a Papal Visit to the United States and preparations for Pope Francis’ Year of Mercy, so the archdiocese has partnered with Virtue Media’s CatholicsComeHome.org and GoodConfession.com on a series of television advertisements meant to invite and encourage Catholics to participate in the Sacrament.
In many parishes, regular confession times are held on the weekends and by appointment with the pastor.  It is the hope of the archbishop and archdiocesan leadership that this evening availability makes it more convenient for people to get to church and take advantage of the grace of the sacrament. Those wanting more information about regular confession times or needing to find their church parish are encouraged to go online to search parishes or to download the “Where Y’at Mass Finder” app available through iTunes and for Android devices.  More information about the Sacrament of Reconciliation including a guide to the sacrament and an Examination of Conscience can be found online at www.arch-no.org
