So says Patricia Miller from Salon who writes an article I find neither helpful or enlightening. There lies within this article some interesting thoughts but reading the entire article led me to the conclusion that this is a partisan piece. I could be wrong, but there seems to be an air of satisfaction in the author's conclusions.
It is sad, yet it is also real, that within the Catholic Church we have allowed others to identify us and separate us using political language: right, left, middle or conservative, progressive. Among a Church with 1.2 billion members and ministering/serving across the globe, I guess it be inevitable that we humans label politically.
The key players contribute to this by staking out provocative claims that do not always conform with Scripture values or handed down Catholic tradition. Bishops, Priests, Deacons should preach and teach faithfully and yes, give comfort to the afflicted, afflict the comfortable, speak the truth and inspire others to live lives of service.
In a Priest, I look for someone who keeps focus off of self and points all to Jesus Christ; I look for someone who faithfully offers the Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacraments, is generous with the gift of presence and by word and deed lives a life faithful to the Gospel. In the fullness of orders, our Bishops, I look for someone who is comfortable being the chief teacher of his flock and overseeing a diocese that offers hope and help to all, most especially the poor and marginalized. In the Deacon, I look for a true servant, not one who does 100% of his ministry on Sunday by showing up for Mass, but one who goes into the places the Church cannot always go all week long: prison, food banks, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, youth centers, hospital, hospice, and sometimes simply "the streets". The clergy must express, from time to time, political views but only when they are defending Holy Mother Church!
In any case, this article is worth reading but please do so in context:
