METAIRIE, La. – A priest was the victim of a violent attempted armed robbery at St. Clement of Rome Church Sunday evening. Held up at gunpoint, he suffered minor injuries after he was hit with a crowbar by one of assailants because he was unable to open the church’s safe, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.
A sheriff's office spokesman said that around 11 p.m., the priest was in his office on Richland Ave., when the two robbers, one armed with a gun and the other armed with a crowbar, confronted the priest.
The priest was struck by one of the robbers when he couldn’t open the safe. The robbers fled from the church empty handed after the attack.
The robber with the handgun was around 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing around 170 pounds and wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt and a black and white bandanna covering his face. The other suspect was 6 feet tall, weighing 250 pounds. He was wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt as well and had dark bandanna covering his face.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 504-364.5300 or call Crimestoppers at 504-822-1111.
