We dodged a bullet today

I've never actually been in a tornado and don't think I technically was today.  But the area in which I live on the Northshore of New Orleans, about 60 miles north of the Crescent City, was hit with a wave of bad weather that was quite scary.  A police officer friend of mine called it a twister that hit just a mile or two through the woods from my house.  But I have never experienced such ferocious wind, blowing in all four directions, hail and loud noises.  We lost power, which remained out for about 7 hours today.  Near my barn, just 25 yards from my house, the winds uprooted a very large hardwood tree.  Fortunately, it fell away from the barn and missed anything of value.  We had so much water on the property we had a storm created creek flooding not only my yard and driveway but the street too.

I was able to get out and drive around a bit and made it to the area where the police officer said the tornado hit.  The damage was all to trees and power lines; all of them toppled over as far as I could see.  But it did not look like any house damage.  Once we had power those of us on facebook from this area did report a neighbor or two with some roof damage and other miscellaneous damages.  The most important thing I can say about this bad weather event is that is appears no one got hurt in the area.

This bad weather actually played a major role in changing things for parades in New Orleans today as we approach Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras.  All the daytime parades were rescheduled to another day and the night parades were asked to roll later in the evening and still they did not avoid the rain.  Things should be much nicer now for Sunday-Tuesday, the last 3 days of parades before we begin Lent.

So tonight I'm grateful for no major damage, the fact that no one was hurt and we actually have power tonight.

Just another reminder we are not in charge!
