Just a few days ago I wrote a piece about my very busy week and the weekend. Last week was one for the books. I wonder when I write these reflections if others understand my intent. I have no need to impress you with how busy I am nor do I wish to give the impression that the diaconate is a ministry of do, do, doing. However, I do think it's worthy to share what is going on in my experience as a Permanent Deacon and I hope others will come to appreciate how necessary the Permanent Diaconate is to the life and ministry of Holy Mother Church.
Therefore, having shared my week that was let's take a look at the week ahead. Over the next six days or so this Deacon will be involved in baptisms, a wedding with the rehersal, a funeral, diaconate training classes, homily preparation and then delivery, prison ministry and adult faith formation. Sometimes weeks like this just happen. The funeral certainly wasn't planned and I already shared my profound feelings at the loss of my mentor. The wedding, which will be a Mass, requires the Deacon to conduct the rehersal and preach at the wedding itself. It will be a preaching crazy week since I'll be doing the homily at the wedding, two Masses Sunday and the diaconate training class for our 2012 candidates is homiletics.
And always remember, this all happens around my life as a husband, father, my career at the bank and my own time for prayer and spiritual reflection.
While ministry does keep me busy, I believe being busy for the Kingdom is what we are all called to be. So may I solicit your prayers for the busy ministry week that awaits and for all those whose lives are busy for the greater glory of God!
