Here is why living on the Gulf Coast in the summer can be unnerving. In this hurricane season we have avoided all the storms lettered A-K. They all have gone elsewhere, mostly into the Atlantic. Not until Irene crossed into North Carolina last week had a hurricane touched American shores.
Then almost out of the blue, from just a conglomeration of clouds and rain drifting into the gulf, we have the mess below at the link I've provided. While no one expects this to be a killer hurricane, what will become tropical storm Lee tomorrow morning will undoubtedly make a mess of this general area over Labor Day weekend. This system still could become a strong tropical storm, but even if it does not, this will be a massive rainmaker over several says. The storm will drift, once inland, over southeast Louisiana from Saturday through Monday; possibly Tuesday. We are hearing of 20 inch rain events. Down here, that means some will flood. And the coastal communities, many of whom were worked over by Rita in 2005 and Gustav in 2008 will get it again.
There is little we can do but be prepapred, heed the appropriate warnings and of course pray. All summer we have invoked the name of Mary as Our Lady of Prompt Succor to intercede for us for protection from hurricane damage and impact to human life. May we redouble our prayer efforts now. And we invite those of you living far from us, pray for a good outcome as we endure this over these next few days.
