Usually I make these posts only to incur the wrath of professional "homers" or folks like my sister that believe quite naively that as long as we got Drew Brees we must be good. Folks, if you love the New Orleans Saints I suggest you constantly watch replays of the 2006 season, 2009 and that incredible magic that produced a Super Bowl victory and maybe even the 2011 season when the Saints looked like a shoe in for another Super Bowl but came up one play short. Watch those seasons now thru February Saints fans because those days are long gone.
In short, we are witnesses to the wholesale destruction of the New Orleans Saints. It's high time for all of us who really love the Saints and have been amazed at our run of great football for quite some time now, why are the Saints falling apart. More directly I believe we should be asking, why Saints, from the very top of the organization, why are you allowing greatness to disintegrate into such crap? Tom Benson deserves our profound thanks because without him, none of the good would never have happened. However, in present day reality check, does Benson even know what is going on. You get the feeling he really believes things are just peachy and it's still 2009-10. Hey Tom, it's far from those heady days. Mickey Loomis, who orchestrated the pick up of great players seems to be content now to go after and sign mediocre garbage and banged up superstars who just can't find the field. For his part, Sean Payton has absolutely no more fire in his belly like in year's past and appears clueless on the sidelines often. Then we have the disaster that is Rob Ryan. He's toxic; he's awful and he needs to go now.
After a completely lackluster pre-season where it often appeared the Saints were game planning to lose, as if they were holding back top secrets to unleash on the NFL come regular season, we witnessed today's crap feast, brought to us courtesy of the New Orleans Saints. First of all, the defense started off looking like the usual ineffective, unimpressive lot that they are. But then thru some miracle, their collective spine stiffens and they played several quarters of competitive football. Then, we witnessed what is the new reality as this organization deconstructs a football team, wholesale offensive ineptness. The Saints now lack the complete and total inability to do anything in the red zone. You see Saints management thought that you could actually improve an offense by getting rid of Jimmy Graham, getting rid of Kenny Stiles, and get better with 3 adequate but unimpressive tight ends and wide-outs like Brandon Coleman and a host of other some bodies. And let's be honest here, Marcus Colston, a great guy and a Saints hero has rapidly declining skills. Rapidly! Then there is that mystery that is the Drew Brees factor. To this day, even after witnessing today's crap feast, some still think Drew is among the elites. Man Drew Brees is very much a Saints hero, an icon and an incredibly wonderful man. I will never discount his contributions to this team but he just is not the same. No arm strength. Today the Saints threw almost never toward the end zone and few and far between downfield. If Drew is declining, and he is, why have we given him less and less effective weapons to work with. Good grief, is anyone in charge actually watching the game? The defense, although showing some grit today, is still bad, very bad. They have an clown for a coordinator and when it really, truly matters, they can't stop squat. The D-line continues to not record sacks and the pressure is laughable. We may have a few diamonds in the rough in the LB corps, thanks to two rookies, but as a group, laughable. We have a weak, puny defensive backfield that will cost the Saints many, many games in 2015.
Free agent acquisitions like Byrd, Spiller, Browner(even after today) are medical busts. So is this LB Ellerbe guy that we so desperately needed instead of Kenny Stiles. This is part of the Mickey Loomis meltdown; crappy work of late in free agency and the draft. Do I need to remind you that the entire 2014 draft is no longer playing football except for Cooks.
What is sorely lacking on this team, beside talent and coaching, is the absence of a single member of this team who looks like they give a damn. This team looks defeated when they take the field. There is wholesale denial from management, to coaching to every single player and many in this organization still think it's 2006 or 2009 or 2011 all over again.
If you are a Saints fan like me take the blinders off. Realize tonight that the 2015 Saints are bad and it's only going to get worse. This is at best a 6-10 team and I may be a little optimistic. For sure, this is a NFL franchise in trouble.
I watched the game in replay tonight to make sure I wasn't being too harsh. I have no such fears. Crappy team, coaching that is tanking and a front office and owner who have no clue.
Advice: do like I did today, go to a party, take a ride, go to church(which you should be doing anyway); simply do not waste a beautiful autumn season on a bad team that simply lacks the ability and desire to do something about it.
