Like most of you I'm watching with great interest as Thanksgiving gets destroyed by run-away Amertican greed. As a people, we have already let retail America destroy the spirit of Christmas not to mention any hint of celebrating Advent. Even Christian communities do less and less for Advent; thankfully, not the Catholic Church!
This year, wholesale shopping for "black Friday" actually begins on Thanksgiving Day. In the past, some retailers would open very late in the day, you know after the turkey hangover would subside. This year, it's shop before the big family feast, during the feast and after the feast. Once unheard of, even McDonalds will open for "hungry" shoppers who may just not have enough time to remember to eat with their families.
This destruction of Thanksgiving is more than enough for me to draw a line in the sand but now comes word of CBS deciding to air the Christmas classic, Rudolph, this Tuesday, two days before Thanksgiving Day. This throws me over the top. I hate to see this happen so I will tape Rudolph and play at a later date.
My hope is that most of us, particular the Catholic faithful who visit my blog from time to time, can agree that:
- this is Thanksgiving week. Celebrate it! Contemplate our thankfulness because God loves us!
- after Thursday, shop for what you need and not beholding to greed!
- Remember Advent! This is an important church liturgical season. Christmas comes, well, it comes at Christmas!
- pray more!
- family more than all the social things that really only focus on social things!
- do not watch Rudolph before Thanksgiving!
OK, I feel a little better. I really will pray that all things, including these next few week, will be celebrated with balance and all we do keeps God first!
