Yes, I know it's confusing but our new Holy Father is Pope Francis and is NOT Pope Francis I. According to the Vatican, immediately upon taking the name of Francis, Cardinal Bergoglio did not add the latin for first to his name. Most Popes who have taken a never before used name haven't done so either. Pope John Paul I most defintely took the name John Paul the First more so because of his desire to honor both Pope John XXIII and Pope Paul VI.
Remarkably, before John Paul I the last Pope to take a never before used name is sometime in the early 10th century.
Read the following from the Vatican:
The new pope should be called Francis, not Francis I, the Vatican clarified yesterday.
Father Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesperson, remarked that the new pontiff was presented to the world with these Latin words: “Cardinalem Bergoglio, qui sibi nomen imposuit Franciscum ” (Cardinal Bergoglio, who takes for himself the name of Francis).
The word “Primum” (the first), wasn’t added.
“It will remain Francis until a successor calls himself Francis II,” Lombardi said
So let's all get on the same page and practice: Pope Francis!!
