Willie Roaf, one of the NFL's most dominant offensive linemen for more than a decade, has been elected to the Hall of Fame -- the second New Orleans Saint who will be enshrined in Canton, Ohio.
The announcement came Saturday, one day before the New England Patriots and New York Giants meet in the Super Bowl. The selection committee can choose up to five honorees each year (a sixth player may be selected by the senior committee). Roaf was nominated in 2011, but passed over.
Roaf spent nine years in New Orleans, concluding his playing career as a Kansas City Chief. He played 13 NFL seasons after being drafted eighth out of Louisiana Tech in 1993. Roaf spent his rookie year at right tackle, but made his mark after switching to the left side in his second season.
He was selected to take part in 11 Pro Bowls in total, and was on the roster of the first Saints team to win a playoff game.
Roaf, 41, joins linebacker Rickey Jackson as the only Saints players in the NFL Hall of Fame. He will be enshrined in a ceremony on Aug. 4.
"We're glad to congratulate William Roaf in his selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame," Saints owner Tom Benson said in a statement. "He meant a great deal to our team during his career with us."
Roaf played 131 of his 189 regular season NFL games with New Orleans. He also took part in three playoff contests.
Running back Curtis Martin, linemen Chris Doleman, Cortez Kennedy and Dermontti Dawson, and senior selection Jack Butler, a cornerback, fill out the 2012 inductee class.
