So here I sit in downtown Chicago and everyone is wearing the colors of 'da Bears. Unless you live under a rock, today its the Saints vs 'da Bears in the Superdome today. Yep, I traveled to Chicago for my vacation when many from Chicago ventured to the Big Easy. I will be up here in the Windy (and so much cooler and pleasant) City while my Saints do battle with those dreaded Bears. By the way, the Saints, still basking in the glow of that Super Bowl in Febraury 2010 could easily be 0-2 after today because the Bears, like the Packers last week, are no slouch. But I'll save that for later today.
I say I'm behind enemy lines because of the big game but overall, so far Chicago has been so good! Of course the first thing we did was be part of the throng cheering on the Cubbies yesterday in their 2-1 win over the Astros. Wrigley Field, a hot pastrami sandwhich, peanuts and pretzels and take me out to the ball game means I was one of them, at least yesterday.
Last night I and the Mrs. ate the bigest most amazing Chicago style deep dish pizza; so big that after we were full and then past full, I went downstairs and shared the rest with the bellhop staff. I make friends everywhere I go! Today we have a big tour planned(my wife is doing everything to keep me away from sports bars and a sports incident) and then evening Mass at the Holy Name Cathedral in downtown Chicago.
As a Permanent Deacon, still feeling almost newly ordained(soon to be 3 years) I actually struggle sometimes with things like vacations and weekends off. I really get all wrapped up in ministry, including formation activity, and hate to break the cycle and rythym of ministry. My brother Deacons all tell me this too shall pass. And in this case, I'm very thankful to my wife for insisting we get away. That is one, among many, roles she plays for me in ministry as we all must be mindful of taking time to get away, reflect, relax and renew.
So Chicago continues to be my adventure for the next few days. Will keep you posted!
